Until a few years ago, Noor used to be among dozens of women beggars at the cemetery located near the city of Thatta in Pakistan’s southern Sindh province. In 2018, celebrated Pakistani architect Yasmeen Lari decided to help beggarwomen earn a dignified living and launched a program to teach them how to make kashi tiles, one of the oldest handicrafts in Sindh.

The dilapidated structure, located on Paria Street near Wazir Mansion and the historic Kharadar Chowk, was part of the Old Town Heritage Trail. The project involved designing a terracotta paved entry court, a terracotta pathway, and a zero carbon bamboo garden pavilion. However, the community felt helpless and encroached on the chowki. Despite a written undertaking, the qabza group did not remove the illegal basement structure and paid only partly for the restoration. The project was completed using the Foundation’s reserves and funds raised from well-wishers.

Dr Yasmeen Lari designed and proposed a 13-segment trail from Denso Hall to Custom House, each segment named after prominent historic buildings. The trail aimed to decarbonize and green Karachi, mitigating climate change impact. However, state funding was limited, yet the project was initiated in January 2020 and first segment was completed in 2021.
